Global Recognition

In recognition of his widespread influence, he was awarded an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in person in 1953.

Martin Wickramasinghe's work transcended national boundaries, earning him recognition on the international stage. His novels were translated into multiple languages including English, Russian, Japanese, Chinese and several European languages.

The film based on his book Gamperaliya was selected Best Film and bestowed the coveted Gold Peacock award at the International Film Awards Show in 1966 held in New Delhi.

ACADEMIC RECOGNITION

Scholarly Appreciation

Martin Wickramasinghe received significant academic recognition for his vast contributions to literature and intellectual thought. He was awarded the Saasthrasoori (D-lit) by the University of Sri Jayawardenepura in August 1960. He also accepted the Literature Chakravarthi (D-lit) from the University of Peradeniya. Further acknowledging his impact on Sinhala literature, he was bestowed the honour of Literature Chakravarthi from the University of Kelaniya in October 1965, and the same title from the University of Colombo in 1970. His intellectual breadth was recognized through appointments such as a member of the Radio Broadcasting Commission in March 1953 and to the National Languages Commission in 1954, specifically to the committee for making a glossary of scientific terms. From 1950 to 1960, he served as President of the Writer’s Guild. In 1974, he received the first Presidential award for Literature from President Gopallawa.
